The ceremonial launching of the book Thatta Gaayikaawa, a Sinhala adaptation of La Cantatrice Chauve (The Bald Soprano) by Romanian-French absurd playwright Eugene Ionesco will be held on September 02 at 3.00 pm at the National Library and Documentation Services Board Auditorium, Colombo. A discussion forum on Thatta Gaayikaawa, theatre and theatre translation in general will follow the initial talks by Prof. Asoka de Zoysa, Prof. Sivamohan Sumathy, veteran photographer Hemantha Arunasiri and Prof. Arjuna Parakrama. Thatta Gayikaawa is translated by Kanchuka Dharmasiri and Lohan Gunaweera.
The book also includes an appendix presenting Sinhala translations of three articles by Eugene Ionesco on La Cantatrice Chauve, the much acclaimed essay 'The Theatre of the Absurd' by Martin Esslin, and an essay by Kanchuka Dharmasiri reflecting on the dynamics of the translation processes that took place when bringing Thatta Gaayikaawa to the Sri Lankan context.
